For the past thirty-three years, Garry has been teaching (social sciences) and coaching (football, basketball, track and field, strength and conditioning), all over Ouachita and Morehouse Parishes. Garry is currently the Senior Army Instructor (SAI) at Wossman High School. He is a certified personal trainer and a chartered member of the Our Kids Program (OK). He was blessed and honored as being named the athletic director and head football coach at Carroll High School from 1999 to 2001. Even though he was disappointed by his win/loss record, he was very proud of the success he achieved with the student athletes where it counted the most.

Coach Himes was very instrumental in establishing a relationship with the Carroll Faculty, especially the English department, allowing him to implement an ACT Tutorial program. The results were outstanding; in that, Carroll student-athletes began meeting the required state standards, enrolling into college, and continuing their education.

Because of his extensive military background, Coach Hines was able to assist Carroll High School in being placed on the Department of Defense (DOD) potential JROTC Program list and Air Force JROTC (AFJROTC)
